Why this exists
I was a bookkeeper. I spent hours of every day sorting other people’s receipts and typing them up — shoeboxes, carrier bags, envelopes of curled-up till roll.
The work wasn’t hard. It was reading a number off a bit of paper and putting it in the right box, over and over, and there was always more of it waiting.
The whole time I kept thinking there had to be a better way. Not for the judgement calls — for the typing.
So I built it. Photograph a receipt, or send it on WhatsApp, and it’s read and filed under the right HMRC category before you’ve put your card away.
The categories are right because I used to do this by hand.
Questions
What file types can I scan?
Photos (JPG, PNG, HEIC from an iPhone) and PDF invoices. Take a photo in the app, upload from your device, or send on WhatsApp.
Does Splitstick submit my tax return to HMRC?
No. Splitstick keeps your records and exports them: it files receipts under HMRC Self Assessment categories and gives you CSV, PDF and spreadsheet exports. You, your accountant or your MTD software do the submitting — Splitstick doesn’t send your tax return or Making Tax Digital updates to HMRC.
Can I use it with Making Tax Digital?
Yes, as the record-keeping side. Your SA103 summary splits your expenses into the four MTD quarters, ready to enter into the HMRC-recognised software you submit with — including bridging software if you file from a spreadsheet. Splitstick itself isn’t MTD submission software, and the exports are included in your plan.
Does it connect to my bank?
No. Splitstick works from your receipts and invoices — photos, PDFs and WhatsApp. There’s no bank feed, so there’s no bank login to share.
Does my accountant need an account?
No. You download one folder for the tax year — the spreadsheet, a PDF report and every receipt scan — and send it however you normally would. See what’s in it.
What if it reads something wrong?
You can review and correct every entry before it’s exported — nothing is final until you’ve checked it. Lower-confidence reads are flagged.
Do I need to be VAT registered?
No. Splitstick tracks VAT if you have it, but works just as well for non-VAT-registered sole traders.
What happens if I cancel?
Scanning stops, but nothing is deleted. You can still log in, view every receipt you’ve scanned and download all your exports.
Is my data secure?
Every account’s documents are completely isolated. You can export or permanently delete your data at any time.
